The Portland Area Library Foundation (PALS)
The Portland Area Library Foundation (PALS) was originally created in 2007 to raise funds for the new library building. Over the years, the Foundation has transitioned into an endowment foundation rather than a fundraising entity.

What is the definition of a foundation and a financial endowment? A foundation is a legal categorization of nonprofit organizations that will typically either donate funds and support to other organizations, or provide the source of funding for its own charitable purposes. A financial endowment is typically organized as a public charity, private foundation, or trust. Among the institutions that commonly manage an endowment are academic institutions and cultural institutions, such as museums, libraries, hospitals, or religious establishments.

An endowment may come with stipulations regarding its usage. In some circumstances, an endowment may be required to be spent in a certain way or alternatively invested, with the principal to remain intact in perpetuity or for a defined period. This allows for the donation to have an impact over a longer period of time than if it were all spent at one time.

The Portland Area Library Foundation Endowment was started with a $50,000 gift to the library by the late Dr. Thomas Brumbaugh. He was a wonderful contributor for several years to the library and this money was left in his will to continue his support. The Foundation is very grateful for his generosity.

Donations can be given in numerous ways, such as in the form of a lump sum gift or left in a person’s will. The principal of any gift will be invested and only the interest will be used to support the needs of the library.

Many libraries have endowment funds to enhance their service to their communities. This can be the security a library needs when there are economic downturns or when there are great needs for capital improvement, etc.
